“TRAVEL-DIARY OF A LIMBO-QUEEN”
project by Mirka Raito on the performance-tour “Artists on the Road” 2002

The performance “limbo-queen” deals with a language. Body-language,
flirting or missunderstanding, fears and then protection. It´s a variating story about people meeting each other and facing themselves.

LIMBO-QUEEN is a female creature with colourfull skirt and
glittering shirt. Her character moves from girly princess to
a provocation of a self-assertive queen.
First in her performance she finds 2 persons to keep her jump-rope,
1 person in both ends. Then she connects more people by placing
colourfull paper-garlands to their hands. Then she sings and tells:
a song like a hymn and a story about the blind man. By the tension
of an intim installation she´s forced to start to tell about her life on
the road. She tells about moments with strangers; mostly people she
met and never saw again. She tells about daily news or daily chores.
Between each personal, often funny or lonely story she reacts to the
surrounding.Like she would wake from a dream.
“Hey, this looks like Limbo!” she shouts and turns herself under
the rope to the other side. Music starts and she provokates and
incourages the audience to join her limbo-competition. Her aim is to
warm up the athmosphere and make the people dance and do
the limbo with her.Is this a party now? Her solo-performance has
turned to be varietee of several people. She makes animating harmless
flirt. “Go for it, Baby!”someone from the audience shouts. Suddenly
she remembers the chines fortune-cookie she got on the diner and takes
it out from her bag. The text inside of it is: “Those who play with
the fire might get burned”.
Performance ends when there´s nobody who can go lower than her.
